How differential works

Car wheels spin at different speeds, especially when turning. When used in this way, a differential couples the longitudinal input propeller shaft to the pinion, which in turn drives the transverse ring gear of the differential. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS.


When you look at a complete modern differential – it looks incredibly complicated. However, when you break it down systematically and understand the fundamentals of what it’s trying to achieve and how it’s trying to achieve it, you’ll notice that it really is quite a beautiful thing.

An open differential is the simplest of all the available differential types. The design of the gears in the differential determines the torque bias ratio. Put in more spokes. Further filling in the spaces between the spokes gives steadier, more continuous action, and changing the shape gives firm constant contact.
